The first large scale continuous influent, intermittent discharge variant of a Sequential Batch Reactor wastewater treatment system was installed in Tullahoma, Tennessee in 1985.
The 3 MGD (million gallons per day) facility, designed to treat up to 12 MGD during winter months, provides service to Tullahoma's residents as well as the City's industry.
The Austgen Biojet ® Intermittent Cycle Extended Aeration (ICEAS) was selected as the most cost-efficient wastewater treatment alternative.
When built (1985) it was the first in the United States and the largest in the world.
In 1993/95 the plant underwent an expansion and upgrade.
The plant was upgraded to a 5 MGD facility, redesigned to receive up to 28 MGD influent flow (with the addition of a 48 MG equalization basin).
The plant operates and is regulated under the EPA and State of Tennessee through the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System).
